The Plan

He says we have nothin' to do with it
Nothin' to do with anything
that happens to us
That it's all God's plan.
That I shouldn't worry about
that kid who went off to Iraq
Not worry about him gettin' shot
Cause it's already written into the plan
Into God's plan.
That the floods an' the earthquakes
an' all those people dyin'
An' the wars bein' fought
an' women an' children bein' blown up
An' millions of people starvin'
An' kids shootin' at each other
Is all part of God's plan.
Like it's some Greatest Show On Earth
an' we're just here to watch it.
He says no matter what ya do
Ya won't be makin' any change
in God's plan
Cause it's already written.
He says it real cold and detached
The same way he talks
about the world ending
An' about what comes after that
How it's a much better place than this one
for the ones who are saved
An' he goes on
about the ones that are chosen
an' the ones that aren't.
Him bein' one o' the chosen.
An' I wonder, does he know
by lookin' at a person
whether they're gonna be
raptured or not . . .
Is there a secret society
with secret codes
an' secret oaths
he belongs to
Makes it so that
when the end comes
he can stand there
solid in his righteousness
knowin' it's all goin' down
accordin' to God's plan . . .
Cause he stands in it now
His righteousness
Passin' judgment the way he does
on those he believes for sure
are not chosen.
I've seen him do it
with the single black mother
who's livin' on welfare
an' him sayin' it's her fault
for makin' her life
turn out that way
Her an' her babies
livin' off the state
An' him not knowin' word one
'bout that woman's story.

An' I wonder, does he ever wake up at night
(maybe four in the morning
that god-forsaken hour . . .)
an' lay there in the dark
Needin' somethin' more
then the comfort of knowin'
The end times are comin'
An' his place is set
His future secure
Cause it's all in the plan
It's all written in stone.
